Why Dondo exists

Dondo was created to support communication when standard tools don't work.

Many people experience barriers to communication because of language differences, disability, neuro-divergence, stress, or unfamiliar systems. Too often, digital tools assume one "normal" way to communicate - fast, text-heavy, and socially demanding.

Dondo is being developed to offer multiple ways to express and receive information within a single, calm communication space.

Our focus is not on replacing existing services or systems, but on supporting real moments where communication gets stuck.

When we engage with organisations, we are clear about:
  • what stage the product is at
  • what decisions are still open
  • where feedback can directly shape what is built next
icon
Instead, we invite:
  • critique of assumptions
  • identification of risks or exclusions
  • guidance on what should not be built
  • insight into real-world constraints

Engagement is always:
  • optional
  • time-bounded
  • proportionate
  • respectful of capacity

How we work with organisations

We are building Dondo iteratively and transparently.

We currently have an MVP (minimum viable product). It exists to make conversations more concrete, not to present a finished solution.

We do not ask organisations to validate predetermined designs or act as unpaid testers.

What we are building… and what's still open

Dondo is being developed as a multimodal communication tool.

Features we are developing

  • Choice of communication method (e.g. text, audio, visual prompts)
  • Choice of how messages are received (e.g. text or audio output)
  • Support for different languages and communication preferences
  • Privacy-first design with clear boundaries

Key design decisions still open

  • How specific accessibility features should work in practice
  • What creates predictability and reduces pressure
  • What is genuinely useful versus well-intentioned but burdensome

Ethics and safeguards

We recognise the risk of extractive or tokenistic involvement in inclusive technology. Our approach is guided by the following principles:

  • Lived experience and frontline expertise are valued, not mined
  • Participation must be voluntary and informed
  • No endorsement is implied by involvement
  • No organisation is expected to recruit service users on our behalf
  • No personal data is required to give feedback

We expect parts of the product to change or be removed based on informed feedback.

Let's Have A Discussion?

If you're interested in a conversation - or simply want to sense-check whether Dondo is relevant to your context - we'd be glad to talk.
